Copenhagen, Denmark
Not every winter day is created equal. Maybe it’s “A bit chilly out here” cold. Or “Let’s drive to the snow this weekend” cold.
When the thermometer drops all the way to “I can’t feel my face” cold, there’s only one thing to do: drink hot chocolate.
I thought I’d found hot chocolate nirvana when I sampled the Madrid and Paris versions of this classic. But the Danish version is a serious contender for top spot. Here’s the recipe from a cafe in Copenhagen:
Impale three chunks of chocolate on three skewers. Your choice: dark or milk. (No, “white” isn’t really chocolate.)
Yes, there are kits out there, but don’t do it. (I mean, even me, the anti-cook, can stab a square of chocolate with a sharp stick.) That’s because odds are, the chocolate won’t be very good. Choose European over American, and go as premium as your budget will allow.
A marshmallow is a nice touch but not necessary.
Heat a cup of regular milk to near boiling and pour it into a mug. Note: the Copenhagen cafe I visited didn’t even offer skim or low fat milk options; soy was the recommended substitute if you weren’t down with dairy.
Plunge the chocolate end of the three sticks into the milk and stir until the chocolate is dissolved.
Drink and have another before your husband notices what you’re doing and asks to share.
You’re welcome.
