Lake Garda, Italy

Husband bought a flat cap from a street market on one of our trips to Italy. As we soon discovered, thanks to his red hair and fair features, whenever he wears it, he’s mistaken for English.

Scene: At the dock where we are filling our rental boat with gas. The conversation was in English; Husband’s Italian is limited to twenty words, all food- or wine-related.

Gas attendant (about 17 years old) to Husband: “Are you English?”

Husband: “No, Canadian.”

GA: “You don’t have a Canadian accent.”

H: “I live in the States.”

GA: “You don’t have an American accent, either.”

H: “Do you know many Americans?”

GA: “Yes! I have met people from New York, North Carolina, and Texas.”

H: “You know what? You’re right; I don’t have an American accent.”

GA: “I knew you were English!”
