Travelers will no longer be restricted when packing liquids in carry-ons, thanks to this new technology.
When going through TSA security, taking large electronics out of your bag and keeping liquids in containers to less than 3.4 fluid ounces is the rule. That rule may soon be a thing of the past, thanks to new technology.
In October, 2021, Ireland’s Shannon Airport became the first to implement a new CT scanning security system. The technology allows passengers to carry on liquids without restrictions on volume and to leave large electronics, such as laptops, in their cabin bags. (For the record, this wasn’t the first time Shannon Airport was a pioneer in the travel industry. In 1947, the airport opened the world’s first duty-free shop. And in 2009, it became the first airport to provide US pre-clearance immigration facilities.)
Donegal Airport, also located in Ireland, has installed the new CT scanning technology, too. (If you’re interested, the cost was around $2.6 million.)
The CT scanners are similar to the ones used in hospitals; two dimensional scans (the current standard) are replaced with 3D imaging, enabling airport security agents to better see what is in your bag and determine if it is a threat. Look for liquid bans to be lifted in airports around the world as more countries adopt the new technology.
Twist’s Take: New tech means no more liquid restrictions and faster processing at airport security.
