(And here’s what you may want to do instead.)
You’re likely aware your passport should typically be valid for at least six months past the end date of an international trip. Many countries require this for entry, and if your passport expires within the stipulated timeframe, you may be turned away from your flight at the airport.
But did you know some countries also require you to have two to four blank pages in your passport, too? I don’t mean spaces available on various pages; I mean fully blank pages.
While American passports are designed to fit several passport stamps per page, it’s not uncommon for immigration officers to stamp pages in a way that takes up more space than necessary. They can also skip an open space in favor of a blank page, which can quickly deplete the number of available blank pages, potentially before your passport’s expiration.
I once submitted my passport for a Mozambique visa, which required three blank pages. Unfortunately, I had numerous pages with only one or two stamps, but not the required three blank ones. My visa application was denied; I had to renew my passport early in order to have the requisite blank pages.
Some travelers attempt to preserve blank pages by placing sticky notes on specific pages with a polite message like “Please stamp elsewhere; saving this space for a visa.” As sticky notes are not permanent, they don’t damage the passport or render it invalid.
The Post-it method, however, isn’t a guarantee those pages will be left blank. Immigration officers are trained to follow specific protocols, and a sticky note might not always sway their decision.
If you do use the sticky note method, don’t make a fuss if the immigration officer disregards it. Remember, he or she has the discretion to deny you entry!
If you don’t want to rely on Post-Its, consider requesting additional pages when renewing your passport. There is no additional charge for the “large book” option, which increases the standard 28 pages to 52, and it could save you from the need to purchase a new passport book prematurely.
Another strategy is to apply for a second passport, which is permissible under certain conditions and can be a lifesaver for those who travel often for business or leisure.
Twist’s Take: Use a sticky note or other alternative to make sure you have enough blank ages for visas.
