This doorstop alarm makes it onto my essentials list.

When it comes to travel gadgets, it’s hard to find ones that truly deliver. But among the clutter, there are a few one I swear by. Here’s one of them: a doorstop alarm ($14 for two).

It’s simple yet effective. Use it as a regular doorstop or activate the alarm to alert you with a loud 120-decibel sound if someone tries to enter your room. Powered by a 9V battery, it has three sensitivity levels to avoid false alarms. (For example, if you set the sensitivity to low, it won’t go off if someone simply jiggles your doorknob.) It works best on hard ceramic tile or wood; linoleum or medium-to-high-pile carpet can reduces its effectiveness.

If you’re not into doorstops, there is this portable door lock ($15 for two).

It fits between the door and frame, preventing the door from being opened, even with a key. Note: it doesn’t work well with all doors; it can fit so tightly, I have a tough time opening the door (not great in a fire or emergency evacuation!). Other times it was too thick to fit between the door and the jam, still other times it was too thin and slid to the floor. So, while it’s handy, it’s not foolproof.

Twist’s Take: Use this doorstop or door lock to make your travel digs more secure.
