If you’re embracing the trend, here are eight of the best models to consider.
Just when you think the fashion industry has done everything, it goes and reinvents the fanny pack. Sure, these next-generation hip pouches are billed with sexier names—belt bags, waist wallets—but we all know what they really are.
The fanny pack has always been a statement piece, but until a few years ago that statement was either, “Hello, I’m a tourist,” or, “Yes, the ’80s are alive and well.” Buckling on one of these human-turned-kangaroo pouches was not fashionable.
Now, fanny packs are crossing bodies, cinching waists, and hanging low on the hips of runway models at the Paris and Milan shows. Fashion-forward celebrities have been spotted toting their essentials waist-side.
Through the lens of pure practicality, the fanny pack looks pretty good. It’s easily accessible, hands-free, and the perfect size for when a backpack is too big and pockets too small. Your upper body is unencumbered—a weight off your shoulders in every sense of the phrase—and your wallet and phone are secured at your waist, accessible at the pull of a zipper.
Still, I’m not sure I’m ready to join the revolution (memories of a nylon Eagle Creek model are still fresh).
Me and my Eagle Creek bag (at least I removed the front label) in Singapore in the ‘90s.
In case you’re ready to embrace the trend, here are some models to consider, along with styling advice.

- If you’re looking for sporty.
If you need a fanny pack for outdoor activities, this sporty Adidas waist pack may suit. It’s made from a durable polyester material, has a mesh lining, and lays completely flat when not in use, making it easy to pack. The bag comes in traditional as well as bright colors (so you can easily be spotted while on the trail or in the runner’s pack) and costs $20-$25.
- If you’re looking for see-through.
This Veckle Clear makes going through security at festivals and sporting events a breeze, plus its compact size is within sizing guidelines for most stadiums, including all NFL venues. It’s waterproof, too; just the thing for outdoor concerts.
- If you’re looking to carry beverages.
No need to lug around a tote or shoulder bag in order to carry a water bottle. This Travelon Anti-Theft Waist Pack features a clever pull-out pocket that doubles as a bottle holder. The travel-ready bag also has plenty of interior pockets to help organize your belongings and RFID-blocking card and passport slots for keeping your personal information safe. Available in black, gray, and navy, it’s priced at $30.
- If you’re looking for designer.
Walk into any designer department and say the words, belt bag. They all have them—Prada, Gucci, Vuitton, and so on—with prices starting around $800 and going up—way up—from there. This $800 Prada nylon model caught my eye; it’s a dead ringer (minus the logo) for my long-ago Eagle Creek.
Speaking of designers, how do you style this former fashion faux pas for travel?
To keep it classic, stay simple. Pair a minimalist leather/smooth nylon pack with a fitted white t-shirt, frayed/ripped denim, and some comfy travel shoes or around the waist of a casual, lightweight dress. For a bolder look, pair a printed pack with high-waisted shorts and a body suit or crop top. You can even belt one around a long wrap coat or cardigan to layer up when the temperature cools.
